is there a way for me to read as well as rewrite my epm7064a altera max and the like for backup purposes? appreciate any help in advance...thanks! chris

Yes, unless hte security fuse is set. Note that one of the 7000 family is not JTAG programmable. Be that A, B, or S. Thre datasheet will tell.
