Seeing as you are on a workstation versus a stand alone PC, try creating a new folder using HEW. I'm guessing but it appears that you don't have the proper permission to write a file into the folder that HEW chose as a default. Either that or you need to get the proper permissions in the default folder.

I'd suggest going here and downloading and installing the latest versio of HEW.
Backup your project and HEW installation first, but you're working with version of the HEW that's at least 5 years old. The new HEW will open th older project files and up-convert them.
Depending on the size of the object code file, the evaluation compiler ma be good forever (if your output is less than 64k for the H8, 256k for SH or just 60 days.
I'm not sure the Makefile option worked in version 1 of HEW, but it doe now! :-)
A good place to go to post specific HEW questions is
It's the community support site for Hitachi and Mitsubish H8/SH/M16/M32....
