Can PIC/AVR serve as minimal USB host?

Is it possible to use either AVR or PIC uC with hardware USB to read blocks from say an optical drive or such ..? (implicit usb host)

Doesn't need to be standards compliant. Ugly hacks can be used ;)

Yes, to both, but the timing is ultra 'tight'.

USB device has been done,

But I don't think host has (yet....) The first hurdle would be whether the drive can be persuaded to run at low speed

Both Microchip and Atmel offer (respectively) PIC and AVR devices with USB OTG support. If you are happy to count the PIC32 as a PIC then you won't need any ugly hacks. With Atmel you can use 8 bit or 32 bit AVRs (both available with USB OTG).

Or, if you have SPI already, the MAX3421E.
