CALL FOR PAPERS Second UK Embedded Forum

CALL FOR PAPERS

2ND UK EMBEDDED FORUM October 19/20, 2005 NEC, Birmingham

Following the success of the first UK Embedded forum in 2004, submissions are invited for presentation at the 2nd UK Embedded Forum, to be held in Birmingham from 19-20 October, 2005.

As with the first event, the 2005 UK Embedded Forum is a two-day workshop for UK-based PhD students working in the area of embedded systems.

This important subject area covers computer-based consumer products containing sophisticated software and hardware applications. Design of embedded systems must take into account a wide variety of constraints: performance, code size, power consumption, presence of real-time tasks, and maintainability. The best trade-off has to be found, often operating on a large number of different parameters. Solutions can be proposed at different levels of abstraction, making use of an assortment of tools and methodologies.

The forum is associated with ESS, the Embedded System Show, which includes a technical track for Company Engineers and a major Exhibition.

Objectives

----------

- To bring together those involved in research on different aspects of embedded systems;

- To expose young researchers to the major UK industrial exhibition;

- To provide means for quick publication of work in progress, and valuable feedback from referees and others.

Scope

-----

Submissions are invited from individuals who are currently registered as PhD students at UK Universities. Topics include, but are not limited to:

- embedded software design: predictable design methodologies, design with networked system environments, design space exploration

- software/hardware and software/software codesign for embedded systems

- hardware/software analysis, verification and test for embedded systems

- embedded Linux and real-time Operating Systems

- wireless techniques for embedded systems

- novel embedded signal processing techniques

- low power design for embedded systems

- security design for embedded systems

- interference and error tolerance

- System-on-Chip techniques for embedded computing

- novel I/O techniques and applications

- System-level design

- Simulation techniques for embedded systems

- Benchmarking for embedded systems

- Employment of DSPs in embedded systems

- Data streaming and multimedia in embedded systems

- Hardware/software support for real-time applications

- Code transformation and program parallelization for embedded systems

- Java-enabled devices

- Case studies

Benefits

--------

Benefits of attendance include:

- early dissemination of ideas and results

- keep up to date with the latest developments

- free access to the exhibition, where major employers are represented

- make contacts with technical and managerial staff of embedded companies (who may well attend the presentations)

- make contacts with other researchers in your area

- informal atmosphere

- no conference fee for speakers

- many 'freebies' available, including liquid ones!

Proceedings

-----------

Workshop proceedings will be distributed on CD-ROM as well as in the form of an e-book (these count towards the RAE).

Submission and deadlines

------------------------

All papers are refereed by the program committee. There is a size limit of 2 megabytes per submission. Presentation format is 20 minutes, plus 10 minutes for questions and discussions. Speakers are required to bring their own laptop computer. Authors are required to submit a pdf file electronically; please e-mail to snipped-for-privacy@ncl.ac.uk, no later than May 27, 2005. Authors will be informed of the program committee's final decision by June 24th. The final version of the paper is due July 15th.

Registration and accommodation

------------------------------

Details will appear on the ESS web site
