Avnet Site is Down

Well, essentially down. They are revamping it and it looks like this was such a big job they just can't continue with business while they do work on installing it. Even orders by phone is down until Wednesday.

I wanted to dig for some info on getting started with their Smartfusion2 Kickstart board and there is nothing there. All you can get to is the (new) main page.

Not knowing anything about the website, the generic suggestion is to try web.archive.org especially if you have some direct URLs and see if anything is archived there. The information archived there represents the website at various specific points in the past however.

For a probably more up to date version of the website, there's always the Google Cache option when you do a search query. Try filtering your Google search queries with "site:avnet.com" as part of the query and then look at the cached version against each query (if Google cached the specific URL).

If I just wait until tomorrow they should be back online. Some pieces of it are showing up today. It's just strange they would do a roll out in such a manner where it is down for days and they can't even take orders by phone!

Strange, no, all too common. Costly and Dumb, yes. But, they surely saved money using inexpensive developer and ops staff...

And, they saved money using SAP!

April 5, 2016 Dear Valued Partner, As I previously communicated to you in March, Avnet Electronics Marketing ( EM) Americas is set to transition to an integrated enterprise resource plan ning (ERP) platform, enabled by SAP. We have spent the last two years prepa ring for our system launch and we are now just a few days away.

We started our final conversion last Friday, April 1 and we are on schedule to launch our new system on Wednesday, April 6. We have prepared a robust post-launch support plan so our team may quickly address potential issues t hat may arise in a project of this complexity.

Important Information *

During the transition:

- We will maintain critical support to address customer and supplier needs

- Order processing, maintenance and shipments are suspended

  • Suppliers who have data mapped to our system will need to finish any mappings by Wednesday (April 6)

Questions or Concerns?

Should you have any questions, please contact your Avnet representative or email me at snipped-for-privacy@Avnet.com.

Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation in this endeavor. Regards, Signed: Ed Smith

You are much better off for not knowing...

It's what you feel like having spent two years and millions of dollars on an "everything integration system" that forces you to redesign every business task you do while still leaving a thousand loose ends you have to manually keep track of.

And, drives your customers to competitors when they can no longer place orders (as above). After promising it will do everything, $2MM is an "easy" integration/customization. Right after deployment, your spend is rendered obsolete by the next version, with which your customizations don't work. If your company is still in business...

The IT equivalent of

1) Invading Russia in the winter. 2) Bombing Cambodia. 3) Pickett's Charge.

It's basically the last 4GL. "Consultants" build "applications" out of it for you.

Lol, I think you are probably right.

I remember wanting to find some software that would let me track my parts inventory and anticipate ordering I would need to do. There was a name for this in the 90's that was a three letter abbreviation I can't recall. I looked for it around 2010 and couldn't find it, but a new abbreviation was in use. When I researched that it seemed to have taken a life of its own and morphed into some monster that was incomprehensible to me. I guess the software had become a tool for much larger companies and so had many capabilities I never anticipated much less needed. I also couldn't begin to justify the price.

I expect SAP is not so much different. Maybe that is why no one talks about it without using the acronym. They don't understand it either.

It is now Wednesday of the following week (almost two weeks after the Avnet site went down) and there are still parts of the site that are not up. I am looking for the various downloads to go with a board I bought (that shipped with no disk). The page where you can order the board is now up, but no link to the info. The old description page is still up, but the link for the download doesn't work.

I contacted someone who sent me a link for a copy of the files that were supposed to have been made available. But I can't access the download without a login and I think the download is for the wrong board anyway. They sent a link for the files for the "Development Kit" rather than for the "Kickstart Kit".

This is starting to piss me off.

Have you tried either the Google cache or web.archive.org options ?

Note that there will probably be issues in either case however.

While the Google cache is more recent, the old page has probably been replaced with the new page in Google's cache by now.

The web.archive.org archive will be static, but it's probably pointing to a really old version of the page (assuming it's actually archived the page yet).

However, if you are really stuck, it might be worth trying anyway.

I've gotten the cold shoulder from Avnet at this point. They were saying it would be up in a couple of days. Yesterday they told me to give it a week!

They even promote this board on their main page, but still no downloads!!!

An FAE had emailed me a month ago I assume because I ordered the board. I sent him an email the other day.

I opened a ticket with Microsemi to see if they can get me the info and also asked them to fix the broken links on their web page to the Avnet page that is now gone or at a different address.

I'll try the wayback machine. Good idea. But I really want to see if they have a more recent version. Back when I ordered the board, they didn't even have all the software working properly. I had to wait a few weeks to download tools that would support it.
