Availability of PRISM based 802.11 cards?

There seem to be several embedded solutions which make use of PRISM based 802.11b cards. This seems like a pretty easy solution, even for smaller embedded processors. However, looking around for these cards, it seems they are becoming harder and harder to find. Is it going to be impossible to get them within the next couple years?

Is there a better solution? I can't seem to find one. The 802.11 modules from Digi seem interesting, and while $140 per module is a little high, I'm not going to shell out $1500 for their developement kit just to investigate.

Thanks.

Well, waddaya expect? Those are .11b chips --- 'b' as in "much slower than 'g'". Who's going to do the large-scale buying of such outdated chips to keep the part maker interested in making them? That market has long since moved to .11g.

Their expensive development kit is if you want to add/change the software on the module. If you are only going to connect it via a serial port to another MCU, then just buying a module and hooking up 3V3 and a RS-232 buffer is all you need. One can download all the necessary documents from digi to get it going in this manner.
