OT: Windows registry problem

I posted about my problem installing Service Pack 2 on the microsoft windows update newsgroup and didn't get an answer. My need to install sp2 stems from the fact that I did a "recovery" on my Toshiba laptop, meaning that I used the emergency disc that came with the computer (three years ago) to reinstall Windows. When I tried to download sp2 it failed and I also tried it from a disc I ordered from Microsoft, same result. I get Error 5: Access is denied. I enabled verbose logging, ran the sp2 install, and looked in setupapi.log to find the problem registry key. According to microsoft's kb docs, "These issues may occur when permissions for one or more registry keys are restricted in a way that prevents the update of these registry keys."

Setupapi.log had this error message:

#E008 Setting registry value HKLM\\Software\\Microsoft\\Internet Explorer\\MAIN\\FeatureControl\\FEATURE_DISABLE_MK_PROTOCOL #E033 Error 5: Access is denied.

So I went into regedit, followed the file path all the way to MAIN; but the FeatureControl file or folder is absent. It is not a problem with restricted permissions; the file simply is not there. Will someone please tell me how I can work around this, so that I can finish installing sp2!

I assume you're logged into an admin account and not a user account?

Another approach - start Windows in Safe Mode (hit F8 before splash screen)

Good luck

What will safe mode do? Remember, I need to install sp2 -- that's all I need to do. I have tried a few times, and all the advice I got hasn't helped. This is taking up many hours of my time.

Format the drive and start over, but make sure all your program installs are backed-up first.

I love to cook with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food.

Safe Mode is wonderful for removing spyware, adware, and other nasty stuff because most programs are not running, drivers not loaded, etc.

It might work with the SP2 installation. Worst case will be to follow what Jim recommends, format hard drive, reload recovery CD, then apply SP2. Got a computer weenie friend that can help?

Okay, I finally worked out what was causing the glitch. After the recovery, I allowed Autmatic Update to do its thing, which involved a bunch of miscellaneous updates before it got around to sp2, and these updates were preventing sp2 from loading somehow. The solution: run the recovery disc again, then IMMEDIATELY install sp2 from the CD. I did this in safe mode as a precaution, but I think it would have worked with a regular boot. Thanks for all the replies, everybody. Kell
