OT: Inexpensive digital microscope

I'm thinking of ordering a cheap digital microscope like the one in the link below. I don't expect to get the image quality of a $1000 optiocal lab microscope but the sample images look quite acceptable to me. OTOH, judging from the width in pixels of elements in the images - like individual fibres or the ant - I believe they must have been captured at magnification levels well below the maximum possible. I'm wondering how much the image quality degrades at higher magnifications.

Even if the zooming is optical, lens quality must be a critical factor for useful resolution at high magnification levels. For example, does a 500X image look like a fuzzy enlargement of a

200X image with no increase in detail, as in a digitally zoomed camera photo? Input from those who have used these devices will be much appreciated.

Hi Pimpom,

I have one very similar badged "Veho" and suposedly does X200 magnification. It does not work in Linux which for me is a big disadvantage. The major issue is that as the magnification increases so does the closeness to the object of interest. Its only 1Mpx and while the image is aceptable for 600 X 800, I get far better results from using my digital camera and macro mode.

Thanks, and sorry about the long delay in response from my side. I'm a photography enthusiast and I too use my camera to get enlarged images of objects, but that method is not always convenient. I went ahead and ordered the piece. (It's an X500 model for $17.94 but the URL I gave now links to an X800 model for $29.99). I chose the free shipping option by China Post and judging from the experience of some friends, it will take a month or more to get here. I saw no point in spending an additional $35 just to get it a bit sooner.

No sweat :-) Lets see how it works when you get it. For me, I'll just carry on using the camera !
