Softwood is open-pored wood. Hardwood is closed- pore.
Not that simple. White oak is the common name of (a number of species of) oak that has closed pores. Red oak is the common name (again, a number of species) of oak that has open pores. Both are hardwoods.
TV hanger is installed with red oak as the build-out.

The pores of Red Oak are pretty open and SYP, not so much.
