It depends on the type of video. Many sites use Flash which can be controlled with Flashblock.

Note: Flashblock does not work with Javascript disabled or with NoScript installed.

However I discovered you can simply disable the Flash Player in Tools/AddOns. ...Jim Thompson

You can do tools/applications/flash/always ask

And there is a toggle-animated-gifs addon.

I guess HTML5 will kill Flash eventually, but there are tons of Firefox addons to control things.

Reader mode makes any web page plain text.

Get rid of the Flash plugin--it's a reeking mass of vulnerability--and use HTML5 for playback.
