Need suggestions for sensor technology

I've been looking into creating a MIDI controller based on this instrument:

It's called a Hang Drum. I have a very comprehensive sample library of both the Mk 1 and Mk 2 versions of the instrument.

I've built MIDI drum controllers in the past, using piezo sensors. This time I need to judge not only the strike velocity, but also to be able to tell the difference between a single finger strike and a "slap" where more of the sensor area will be covered by the hand.

I was thinking of using a capacitive sensor, does anyone know if the output of these varies with the amount of hand contact?

As an alternative could an optical sensor be used?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Dave
