Your first stop should be Digikey.

I have a book full of various projects to build that I'd like to try. I have basically no electronics at home - a few caps and resistors ... but not much. Where is the best place to get electronics on line (radio shack has nothing). Also -- is it better to buy a 'grab bag' full of stuff off the likes of Ebay to start a home inventory and then order the stuff I don't get lucky to get on line from some other source?

There's a small store near the corner of Scott and Walsh in Santa Clara called Anchor, I think, that sells some nice packages of electronics in hobbyist sizes.

When I fly to that area, I will sometimes visit and look around. And buy some things, too.

Also, there is Mouser electronics at

(big catalog, like Digikey), BG Micro (smaller, some one-off sales) at

Allied Electronics at

and I'm sure you'll see others mentioned. No one of them is always better than another, on the issue of price. You will have to just shop a bit. Of course, EBay is another possible source, if you have an idea what you are looking for and know the value of it.

For the _cheapest_ electronics you can get, troll the dumpsters in tony neighborhoods and industrial parks. ;-)
