USB RF Transmitter

Hi - I'm trying to work on a home automation project and I need to find a RF transmitter that I can use with my computer (preferably a USB transmitter device)

Here is an example of what I'm trying to do -

I have a garage door opener that works on a 27.145MHz. Inside the garage remote, there are dip switches (code) that trigger my garage door to open/close. Therefore what I'm looking for is a device (USB) that will transmit the RF signal/code from my computer. I am looking to write a program (or use an existing program) that I can specify the frequency to use (in this case 27.145MHz) and send a code/data out through that frequency, using my computer. I have other RF devices which I=92m looking to use a computer program to control. So does anyone know of such a device?

thanks. D

I do not think you will find an off-the-shelf transmitter at 27Mhz.

But TI has the CC1111; Sub-1 GHz RF System-on-Chip with Integrated USB. They have a demo kit available from this link.

Even if you got the transmitter working you'd have to reverse-engineer their rolling code technology.

Just get another garage door opener from the manufacturer. Open it up and add whatever you need to be able to push the button from the computer. If you're set on USB you could get a USB gpio board.

Anything built for 27 MHz should be so old that it was simply tone modulated, and no rolling codes. The few that I saw were built decades ago, some with tubes. That frequency is used for cheap remote control toys in the US, now and would be prone to interference from the cheap transmitters on sub $20 toys.

Yes, new designs are either 315MHz or 434mHz. My garage opener is still 27MHz, but I can add a 315MHz receiver to it. Our community gate is 315MHz. My next project is to wire (or wireless) everything with 315MHz. So, button:

  1. Gate opener
  2. Garage opener
  3. Front door lock
  4. Hot water

  5. Lock up everything and call 911
