Units.exe does not work for this problem

I wanted to know the height of 1 liter of liquid poured into a 1ft^3 container. I used Units to quickly give me the answer. I used:

You have: 1 liter You want: in^3/144 * 8787.4191 / 0.00011379906

This is not correct.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks.

You need to specify the footprint AREA of the container. Unless "units" assumes a perfect cube shape. You could have a 1 cu-ft container with a

12 sq-in footprint that's 12 ft high or a container with a 12 sq-ft footprint that's i in high. Each holds 1 cu-ft, but the height of 1L of liquid will be very different.

Boy it's been a while since I was making my own aquariums... but I think a cu ft is about 8 gallons certainly google must have an answer. (7.481)

I use Convert.exe for unit conversions,

formatting link
Pretty handy, and it's free, of course.

1 Liter converts to 0.035314667 cu ft., so if your cubic foot were 1'x1'x1', the level would be 0.035314667 feet up the cube, or 0.423776 inches. 1 cu ft = 7.4805195 Gallons

Convert.exe is my favorite, too. Mostly I use it to convert my wife's recipes for a crowd of people down to a recipe for just the two of us ;-) ...Jim Thompson

Doesn't HEIGHT X AREA = VOLUME , so the HEIGHT=VOLUME(1LITER)/AREA, so you just need to reconcile units. If you want HEIGHT in inches, then conver t VOLUME and AREA to inches. Google tells me 1 liter is 61.0237 cubic inche s. AREA is 144 square inches, so HEIGHT=61.0237/144=0.423776 INCHES. Reality check: 0.423776 is 0.423776/12 =0.0353 of the whole volume, which is well known to be 7.5 gals, so 0.0353 x 7.5=0.265 gallons. Google says 1 liter is 0.264 gallons, so the calculation is right, 0.423776.

Thanks, everyone. I found my mistake. The following is what I should have been doing. (I'm getting too old for this stuff).

You have: 1 litre/(144 in^2) You want: in * 0.423776 / 2.3597372
