It is more likely a variant of Haidinger's Brush which is primarily related to polarisation. Some people can see it without using polaroid spectacles but it is relatively easy to see with a polarising filter.

Bees and various other insects can do dead reckoning based on the sun's position and navigate using that axis as a reference.
