Silicon Labs tuners in single quantities

Hello,

I'm trying to purchase a Si4731 in single or low quantities but everywhere I look they are only available with a minimum order quantity of several hundreds. Obviously, this is not an option for a hobbyist trying to build his own Hifi tuner.Silicon Labs does not sample these devices either.

Anyone have an idea where one could order these in single quantities?

Why not chose a part you *can* order in singles? A TDA* for example?

Besides, a "hifi" tuner would be made out of discrete parts anyhow, not a SOC..

The Si473x is a family of receiver chips. The Si4735 supports all the functions of the Si4730, the Si4731 and the Si3734. It's sold by Farnell (maybe amongst others.)

Sparkfun sells a shield, think Arduino, with the SI4735 mounted on the shield,. See:

It looks the UIRL got mangled. Instead search for item 090740-71 on Elektor's home page.

At the time of this writing they claim to have 364 in stock. Next day delivery. Maybe in Europe only?

Google shows a demo board available through DigiKey. Will that suffice?

The tuner chip does not appear to be socketed, so extracting it and building your own custom receiver around it is probably not an option (unless you are really good at de-soldering parts non destructively).

Desoldering this type of packages requires special hot air tools and even then you cannot be sure to remove the chip undamaged. Soldering a chip like that manualy is also difficult as the chip has a large solderpad in its center. FAIK this pad is used for cooling so a bad contact may let the chip fry itself.

I searched for the 4731 only. My bad.

If it's available from Farnell, in Europe, it should be available through Newark, in the USA, unless there's some franchise territorial thing stopping it.

These tuner IC's are available from many vendors, just not in single quantities. The minimum order quantity is 300 pieces.

Besides using the Sparkfun shield with Arduino, with modifications the shield can also be used with Mbed. See:
