semi-custom ribbon cable assemblies

John Larkin doesn't like designing his own transformers and inductors and g oing to the trouble of finding people to wind them for him.

His attitude to ribbon cable assemblies is more of the same.

Engineering isn't just about poncing around being brilliant ...

Krw may be an exception there. Jim Thompson posts a lot of links to right-w ing political rubbish, which is to say he farms out his thinking to a sub-c ontractor, while John Larkin's opinions about climate change seem to come m ore or less directly from Anthony Watts denialist web-site, which is buying in a disreputable product from a dubious supplier.

I emailed Digikey. They don't do custom ribbon cables any more.

Pity; you could basically make up a part number and get the cable you needed. No drawings required.

Hmmm, maybe not full-custom, but I regularly buy a 6" 14-conductor cable with IDC female connectors on each end. I don't know when I got the last order of them, but it was within the last couple months. Here are a couple similar items: WM10809

and

H3DDH-1418G

But, maybe they don't make these up to order any more.

OK, the custom-built cable I buy is C3AAG-1406G

So, the C3AAG indicates a gold contact female IDC 0.1" pitch connector without strain relief (CSC14G in this type)

The 14 is 14 pins.

The 06 is 6" cable length.

There is a rectangular cable assembly selector matrix that can be used to build one of these. It is not full-custom, but within limits you can get a pretty wide variety of cables made up.
