I checked with Drew, one of the researchers, who said that indeed the blue light looks extremely intense to the fish, but they rapidly acclimatize to it, in a matter of minutes, and then carry on searching for food, etc., just as before. They have no trouble seeing things illuminated with white light, using the eye's other wavelength receptors. The experiments last for hours, or sometimes even days, if they have a reason to do it that way.
