Red Light Camera Ticket

Idiot who was trying to run the light ends up having to slam on their brakes, and the idiot behind them who was tailgating smashes into their bumper (another immediate citation, generally 100% fault assigned.)

Aside from the minor inconvenience to other drivers for being delayed while tidying up I can't really say I see a problem here, and good luck to anyone in that situation suing anyone but each other.

I quoted this in an earlier post. "Instead of cameras, some advocate longer yellow lights, which would give drivers more time to slow down and not have to make a snap decision... The Florida Department of Transportation will lengthen yellow light times at all intersections with red light cameras by the end of the year and at all intersections by June 2015, said Fred Heery, deputy state traffic operations engineer. Yellow light times will be increased from 3 seconds to 3.4 seconds on roads with speed limits of 25 miles per hour and increased from 5 to 5.5 seconds on roads with speed limits of 55 miles per hour. "

Longer yellow lights probably means you have to install more left-turn arrows, as what usually happens at intersections with long yellows around here during rush hour is several cars gun it to make it through on the yellow while you're trying to make a left turn, and then you're the sucker cruising thru the middle of the intersection getting your picture taken when the light turns if there's a camera

You seem to have minority opinion, there is a lot of interest in the subject. I'm sorry "red light Camera Ticket" was not enough clue for you. I'll keep the OT in mind for you. Mikek

The purpose of a fine is to punish and deter from repeating it again. If a fine is too small relative to income, it will have little/no effect.

For most people, the price of a Big Mac has nothing to do with punishment.

Some of you righties really don't have critical thinking skills.

Have you considered driving a bit slower? 50 km is about 30 mi. Here that is the sort of street where there are lots of vehicles and pedestrians that can suddenly be in your way. Driving even just 13 km (8 mi) over greatly increases the risk. Even if you are an excellent driver, others aren't and driving the speed limit can make a huge difference.

End of preaching mode. It's not like I never sin, but I do see the error of my ways and I drive a lot slower now than I used to. Your fines would have me toeing the line every trip. They are at least double what we have here.

I do about 25 on residential streets. There are people walking dogs, kids on bikes, and so on. I always appreciate it when people do that on my street, so I try to do it on theirs.

Cheers

Some of us live where the streets weren't designed during the horse-and-buggy era... and still remain the same. Even most neighborhood streets here have room for parking plus two lanes for traffic.

And our "feeder" streets are often 6-lanes.

Remember, Arizona had only a "reasonable and prudent" speed limit until the Demoncrats got in control... and enforcement outside of city streets is still pretty much that way... I can drive from here to Yuma at over 100MPH without fear of retribution >:-} (*)

(*) But drive erratically/rudely and they'll get you quickly... they're watching from the air... weekends usually snag HUNDREDS of DUI's. ...Jim Thompson

Pretty much the same here. You can also get "loaner" radar speed panels from the police, and the neighborhood little-old-ladies can file complaints against you that stand up in court ;-) ...Jim Thompson

Reminds me of a funny incident I witnessed some years ago, at Highland and 18th St (Phoenix).

Some clown with sun in his eyes and not paying careful attention knocks kid off bicycle in school zone crossing walk... and continues on blithely unaware.

Crossing guard chases him down the street beating the crap out of the side of the car with his stop-school-zone sign-in-hand before he finally stops.

I stopped and bore witness when the cops arrived, since I saw the whole deal.

I didn't follow thru on seeing the court results, but I'd guess it resulted in several THOUSANDS of dollars in fines plus I'd bet his insurance wouldn't pay for his car damage ;-) ...Jim Thompson

A friend of a friend used to speed all the time and consider the fines to be a speeding tax. It also raises your insurance rates which again, is a regressive cost. However, they keep track of the offenses and at some point call you in for a hearing about revoking your license. Losing your license can still be regressive as money equals power in many ways, such as the power to pay for a cab. But you can't completely mitigate the issues of being poor.

I find it interesting that Jim even notices me. I seldom go toe to toe which him since I don't read most of his posts (the reader automatically marks his as read). When I do reply I usually am making a logical point and try to steer clear of personal insults (admittedly not always successful). So why would he find my posts offensive?

It does. Most jurisdictions in the US now give jail time for the first offense of drunk driving. I believe it this is nearly universal in Europe. Not so familiar with other parts of the world.

Here you don't get a court hearing for such tickets. You can write in but I don't think you have any face time with anyone.
