Re: OT: Then once they've disarmed you...

You get charged with murder for defending your home - even if you're an elderly pensioner!

He hasn't been charged with murder, or as far as I know, anything.

That's in the UK _and_ our east and left coasts.

Try that in AZ, and it's "Hasta la vista, baby" ;-)

Our funniest one, from a few years back, is a tape of a 911 operator telling a grandmother, "You can stop shooting now" >:-}

She caught a burglar/mugger in her granddaughter's bedroom... boom... boom...boom...boom...boom...... until she emptied the clip into him.

Charges? ZIPPO! ...Jim Thompson

I forgot to add, for our customarily addled viewer, I did not criticize Californica, I did not praise AZ, I'm just suggesting, take your criminal behavior elsewhere... unless a short life-span is your goal. ...Jim Thompson

Whatever. Around here we call what goes into a 9mm, a "clip".

But you're free to attempt a crime here, and hope that "clip" versus "magazine" matters >:-} ...Jim Thompson

There was a home invasion a couple of years ago where the perp came after a woman who had locked herself and children in a closet. She was on a three-way conversation with her husband and the 9-1-1 operator. On the tape you could hear the door being broken down, shooting, and the husband screaming "Shoot him again! Shoot him again!" She did. She emptied the .38 into his face.

Charges? Give her a medal and a parade.

Considering that AZ has the 17th highest death rate from firearms, I'm not sure they are all homeowners protecting their families or property:

(download the sheet and do your own sorting)

AZ is right up there with Indiana (19), Georgia(18), and Nevada(16). Not

too close to Alaska (#1 on the list), but much higher up than California

(44). Safest state? Massachusetts @ #1, followed by Rhode Island (2) and

New York (3).

You seem to equate carrying a gun with personal freedom, but try to recall your history - the west was 'wild' before they had gun laws. Once

marshals and city fathers started enforcing no open carrying of guns the

violence plummeted...

The second link is interesting as the author closes with:

"To make America safer (and greater) -- even if today?s murder ra te is lower than 1980?s or 1880s?s ? let?s star t changing many moral choices we make in shaping our culture, our society, our politics, rather than just banning various killers? weapons of choice."

This author appears to advocate examining the root causes of violence, along with some form of gun control.

Those figures are gross firearm deaths, 2/3rds of which are suicides.

Of the remaining ~11,000 a year that are homicides, a large portion are gang-types shooting each other. And only about 250 with rifles of any kind.

1,600 Americans, by contrast, are killed annually with knives. And 2,207 teens ages 15-18 die by their own driving (2015). Less than 10 a year (average) die in school shootings.

So, calls to limit so-called "assault" weapons aren't about lives, but something else.

Mass shootings kill about 21 Americans a year (average since 1966, Washington Post).

te is

t changing many moral choices

That makes sense, since before you have murders, you have to have a group of people who think murder's okay and decide to try it.

Making them into heroes isn't helping--notoriety and 'besting' other incidents seems to have appealed to a number of the perpetrators.

Maybe there is a difference between the US and the UK. In the UK, "arresting on suspicion" is an early step in the process. It lets the police keep the suspect for questioning, and they can then investigate more thoroughly. It also lets the suspect get a lawyer. The suspect can be kept without charge for a certain time (48 hours, I think). /Then/, if the police are confident that they have the right person and enough evidence to convict him, they will charge him.

In serious cases, such as someone getting killed, it is common to arrest quickly so that they can find out all the facts. They will establish if it was murder (an intentional stabbing), and accident, self-defence, or whatever.

Further in the linked article, there is this:

Norman Brennan, a former police officer who represents victims? interests, said police were required to arrest the pensioner in order to investigate whether he had acted in self defence.

But he said he would be ?amazed? if he was prosecuted over the death.

It seems unlike that the pensioner will be charged with anything, but the arrest was required by law.

I saw this personally in Washington DC with my family some years ago. In that case, the SUV with the back window open was the last one in the motorcade. I thought the guy had an M-16.

Probably enough for the relatively controlled area in the Capital. Sheesh, the minigun is pretty awesome, but it takes longer to get it up in position.
