They have enough money to spend a higher proportion of their GNP on defense any other advanced industrial country - Russia isn't advanced, and Saudi A rabia isn't industrial.
Historically speaking they should be spending as much as Russia and China p ut together $284.9 billion. They spend $326.3 billion more.
They clearly have pots of money. Some observers say that it isn't being spe nt on defense as such, but rather on the military-industrial lobbying compl ex, and should be seen as a kind of welfare for the very rich - which lines up with your idea of what socialism is, the diversion of taxpayers money i nto the pockets of those who don't deserve it.
The US doesn't actually spend nearly enough on the targets that real social ists concentrate on, like welfare, universal health care, and education.
Jim Thompson has claimed that the US spends more per head on education than anybody else, which isn't entirely accurate, and ignores the fact that US spending on education is notoriously unequal. Primary and secondary educati on is funded by local taxes collected over school districts. I've never see n a histogram of these expenditures - I suspect that they would be too emba rrassing to be allowed on public web-sites - but even at the state level Ne w York spends three times a much per head on secondary education than Utah.

AKA a HEAT (High Explosive Anti Tank) round. Essentially, it's the same idea behind all modern anti-tank rounds. APFS/DS rounds use a similar strategy but use kinetic energy instead of a shaped charge to create the plasma jet.
I don't think even Abrams' armor can stop an Abrams' penetrator.
Within reason. The conventional penetrators wouldn't get near Iran's underground bunkers, for example.
As you noted above, the problem is finding the targets accurately and hitting them quickly enough. They'd all have to be taken out simultaneously.
