Playstation "groove"?

Hi,

I was returning some DVD's at local public library and commenting with head librarian re: the abuse they seem to suffer. I mentioned seeing many that appeared to have a "groove" (figuratively speaking) cut in the content side a few mm in from the outer circumference.

She said, "Oh, yeah... the 'playstation groove'" and went on to qualify this as the result of playing the media in a playstation.

I found it hard to believe that a product that purports to playing this sort of media would have such a problem.

OTOH, the "groove" is visible in many of the media that I've checked out.

[To be clear: the groove is not present on the ORIGINAL media; rather, some sort of wear pattern]

Can anyone shed light on this?

Wow! Amazing that people don't *notice* that their own discs are being destroyed (I figure people care little about discs belonging to *others*... especially those belonging to The Public).

I'd only ever seen the outermost scratch: so had assumed it was a static flaw (some "thing" that was located in that position).

I will inquire as to why the library doesn't post a warning about this sort of problem...
