OT: Speaking of High Fidelity- Not

I like to listen to Old Time Radio OTR over the internet. One stream has programing I like but is badly distorted. I don't know about audio processing, but I think the tech setting the dials for this stream knows less. Would you listen to this stream and kindly tell the technician 'Dave' what he can do to make the audio better.

Here is his address.

I have exchanged a few emails with him and I just don't think I got my point across to him, maybe a few more ears would convince him. Just because it goes to 11, doesn't mean it should be set at 11.

Thanks, Mikek

What a mess :/ Overloaded, dismal bandwidth, resonance... Not overloading would help, but the result would still be awful.

My guess is that the tech attempts to fake an old radio by introducing the distortion into the stream.

Actually, old AM programs could be pretty good, with the exception of tight bandwidth limitation, though there were stations with over-eager amplitude compressors.

I bought a hard drive that has over 92,000 OTR programs on it on Ebay for $50, a couple years ago. No need to stream.

It is convenient though. I know Dragnet comes on at 6pm, I get my shoes on, get my phone and wifi buds and go for my 1hr plus walk. I go to bed and punch a button or two and my pillow speaker plays whatever program I want, as I have several OTR streams. I also have my internet radio connected to an FM transmitter, so anywhere in my house of yard I can listen to OTR on my FM radio. Lately I have downloaded a podcast streamer, so I can choose podcasts if I wish.

Mikek If your digital recordings aren't distorted, send them to Dave at Hanks Gumshoe.

I doubt that his originals were distorted. He is running some type of softw are to stream the files, which has a gain control. He either doesn't know h ow to use it, or he just doesn't care. Unfortunately, there is no standard 'record level' for the files, and the levels vary widely. A Pro would proce ss each file to an acceptable level before adding them to his or her librar y. You could fit half of the collection I bought onto a 256GB Micro SD card .

Here is one program that will let you 'normalize' the level on a group of f iles at a time:

The original 'Cool Edit' was used by many radio stations before Adobe bough t it, and screwed it up. It only runs under older versions of Windows. Both of these have the ability to repair the damage from scratches, along with popcorn noise from old records. I still have the 'Cool Edit' and I have use d the AVS4YOU software to produce industrial video for a local company.

Would a very good soundcard with types of EQ, compression effects and suc h help? I've an E-MU O4O4 card that will do all sorts of cool things.

I think I finally got enough people to tell him there was a problem that he has finally got it sounding better than it did. It is still hot, but listenable. There were some shows that just were hard to listen to. He could still lower a level somewhere, but... Mikek

You may need to turn down your bass :-) "Broadway is my Beat" is on, it has a voice (Danny's) that can overdrive the system.

I posted above that much of the problem has been corrected. Mikek
