OT: Scientific American on sea level rise.

The February 2019 issue of Scientific American has an article on the incipient collapse of part of the West Antarctic ice sheet

It's on page 36 to 41. It's going to take about a century when it happens, so it's not all that incipient, but there's about 3.3 metres of sea level rise involved.

The article goes into quite a lot detail about the rock surface under the ice sheet, and why the relevant lump of ice is going to slide off pretty quickly when it does let go.

Something similar has already happened in Greenland, but on a much smaller scale.

Damn, 10 feet of sea-level rise is going to be disaster for the world's huge coastal cities. NY, Boston included.

This is why it's a waste of time to squander trillions on sea walls to prot ect coastal infrastructure. It's going to happen sooner than 100 years beca use the ocean temperature is taking off exponentially. And the ice is not m elting from above, it's melting from below due to water which is flooding t he land under the ice, tending to float it.

The earth will take care of itself. I guess the earth will extract its rev enge by taking out a few billion people. But land away from the coasts! A ll hail mother goddess of earth

At 3mm per year, that will take about 1000 years. 10 feet would flood a few per cent of Manhattan or Boston. Surely we can come up with some mitigations in 1000 years. Build apartments on stilts, or marinas, or bring in some truckloads of dirt.

Manmade subsidance is a much more serious problem for flat/muddy cities like New Orleans. New Orleans is sinking a lot faster than sea level is rising.

Isn't that what glaciers do, slide into the sea? More snow makes them do that faster.

Last time we saw a die off even close to that was the 14th century plague. It is recorded the stench of the huge mass of corpses could be smelled wor ldwide. And that was just millions. When you talk about billions, the smell will be overwhelming.

Great things took place in Europe after the 14th century plague. It re-equ alized the lot of humanity and set the stage for the Renaissance. Who can s ay what would happen if mother earth sorted things out again?

You're talking about a pneumonic plague, the so-called Black Death, which killed about one-third of the population of Europe (finally arrived in the British Isles in 1349 IIRC). It's utter nonsense to claim the stench of the dead could be smelled worldwide. You must be living in some alternative universe judging by this and the other hyperbole you post.

Let's just say for the sake of argument you're right. If our future is as bleak and unrecoverable as the "informed sources" claim it to be then there's *nothing* anyone can do about it and consequently, no point whatsoever in worrying over it - much less *obsessing* over it!

Not just me! The whole climate change agenda is cod's wallop; a scam to fleece us into paying even higher taxes. The science does not stack up and their hope is that their claims will be accepted at face value and no one will make the effort to think critically and investigate for themselves. Just like 9/11 basically.

I am not venturing into 9/11 here, nut I do know that those who espouse imm inent destruction due to global warming do not advocate common sense soluti on to solving the problem. For instance, going all nuclear would be the bi ggest step forward to eliminate CO2 and yet...nothing. another thing that would drastically eliminate CO2 emissions would be to cut all immigration t o 1st world countries to prevent more people from burning fossil fuels....a nd yet again nothing from the left to discuss this remedy plan. I figured out along time ago that every proposed solution only advances leftist ideol ogy, even though a rational person who only wanted to solve CO2 emissions w ould aggressively embrace ANYTHING that would stop CO2 emissions . Hence G lobal Warming = HOAX!

Levees and sea walls work. Whole cities and countries are protected by sea walls and levees and dykes.

Some of the melting from below in antarctica is volcanic, from 138 known volcanoes. Antarctia is overall still gaining ice mass, according to NASA.

The first wave was bubonic plague, manifested by buboes, what else. The second, a few years later, was pneumonic plague.

It happens to be a fact. You might try researching things first before you start dictating your reality to the rest of the world.

People should start worrying about if there're things that can be done to mitigate it if not avert it. The local townspeople will probably end up burning you at the stake, so, yes, no worries, there.

I just love the way this guy thinks. First he suggests that we move a sign ificant part of the surface of continents to the coast to raise the land to deal with rising sea levels... so that really isn't a problem. Then he su ggests that the isolated cases of "man made subsidence" like in New Orleans , is the bigger problem!!!

Wow! Can this guy actually run a company???

Prposals for mitigating CO2 emmissions.

  1. Nuclear power construction. 50 percent of all electricity is nuke in 10 years.
  2. Halt all third world immigration into 1st world countries
  3. All federal agencies must conduct conferences via internet.
  4. No more on site accademic conferences. All must be done via the internet.
  5. Fire 250,000 federal employees who burn gas to get to work and who accomplish no econimic output.
  6. Advocate home schooling for as many students as possible to reduce school bus emmissions.

I could go on for hours, but no e of my ideas would ever be taken seriously because global warming is not ablut CO2 emmissions , but rather a tool for advancing leftist idealogy.

It is not coming close to gaining ice mass. And just recently they've disco vered a huge chunk of ice in east Antarctica, the size of Manhattan, with a 1000' deep fissure, about to break off and raise the sea levels two feet w orldwide.
