I wrote an on-line tax program, but some customers can't read my pdf output. Can you guys read the 1040 (bottom of second tab)? I am on a tight schedule, and you all know the deadline.
Sorry, i meant clicking on the 1040.pdf in the example links. For now, i also have a copy in the main page. Please try again to see if you can read the data. Thanks.
I can read it, it is a blank form, not with the numbers filled in. I do get an error message from Adobe Reader : "This document enabled extended features... The document has been changed since it was created and use of extended features is no longer available. Please contact the author for the original version of this doc."
It seems the original 1040 pdf is set up so you cannot alter it. Most likely the IRS does not want you making tax programs that they don't know about.
I can write and read from the same program, acroread, evince, etc. I can write from acroread and read from evince. I CANNOT write from evince and read from acroread.
No, IRS don't want to stop this at all.
more details:
I use gnome's docunment viewer (evince) to generate the meta-data, then ins ert the real data with apache/php/c in real time. Adobe's acroread knows a bout the extended features, but refuses to display them. It probably see t hat it is not written by Adobe's program, even though evince asks for no su ch protection. Since these are public files generated by the IRS, there mu st be rules for inter-operabilities. Adobe is probably breaking some rules somewhere.
Solutions are:
Use acroread only.
Remove acroread and use external non Adobe program to handle pdf.
Rewrite all tax forms in non PDF format.
Rewrite pdf plugin for IE and firefox for non Adobe pdf.
Works fine for me. The .pdf was perfectly legible. I'm run Widows 7 home edition, and viewed the document via up-to-date versions of Mozilla Firefox and Adobe Reader XI.

Unfortunately, there is no XI (11) for Linux, only IX (9). Yes, they are r unning some XPs. So, i'll tell them to spend a few hundreds (Win 7 upgrade ) to save a few dollars. BTW, they can't legally use one commercial tax so ftware for many clients who are not paying anyway. It's a free service, th at's why i need to write the software for them.
It's probably rigged by the IRS in the original PDF form you copied.
To get it to work, SCAN it into the PDF program of your choice, then add the fields. I do that all the time using Adobe Acrobat Professional v7.1.0 ...Jim Thompson

Bill said he can read it with Win 7.
It's probably rigged by MS/Adobe to force system upgrades.
Newer versions of Adobe read older versions... my default game is make PDF's in v7.1.0 then "Reduce File Size" down to v4. ...Jim Thompson

OK, i did a quick search...
Gnome/evince is based on the poppler library which implemented the xpdf-3.0 code-base. Adobe/acroread knows the file format, it just doesn't like any foreign watermark in the file.

it looks pretty messed up, and different dependign on the viewer, the browser plugin has oversized fonts, "xpdf" and "evince" have extra glyphs, and "gv" only shows the bare form.
I can rewrite it with acroread instead of evince. But acroread centers the numbers, rather than right justified. Will deal with this later. First t hing is to get eFile working, in order to pass IRS certification. The file format is almost compatible with OpenTaxSolver, and should work with IRS e File with a filter. There is a checkbox to send the data to IRS. Personal SSN & PIN files are now available:
