OT: More Win7 Crap

More Win7 Crap...

Every time you open Windows Explorer, then close it, leaves a "process" running.... and they just keep piling up, another copy for each open and close :-( ...Jim Thompson

Sounds like a bad Explorer extension. Uninstall any recient programs that integerate with explorer to see if that fixes it.

Recent versions of Firefox under Linux do something like that too. Granted, they don't pile up because it refuses to start a new instance while the old one lingers. It's clearly a product of people who have more Micro$oft than Unix experience. :-(

'Launch folder windows in a separate process when opened' is an option you can set (under the view tab). The default is 'off'.

You can also have them persist over a logon including a power cycle which can either be great or really annoying, depending on how you work.

Organize -> Folder and Search Options -> View

Same place you tell it not to hide the file extensions and do other brain-dead things like hiding folders.
