OT: more lunacy from California

When you say "shit hole countries" Sweden immediately springs to mind. From close to the top of living standards in the continent to virtually uninhabitable, all in the space of a few short years. But that's Socialism for you. :(

Actually, it's right-wing propaganda for you. Sweden is still close to the top of the tables of living standards I've been able to find, always ahead of the UK.

Cursitor Doom really believes the rubbish he read in the Daily Mail and on Russia Today.

Not even the Telegraph is that silly.

Perhaps if you were living in the tiny corner of Sweden currently infested by Daily Mail reporters and whoever it is that writes Russian Today's repor ts you'd experience a less than optimal environment - ambulance chasers do go to places that most people avoid, and ambulance chasers looking for nega tive stories have a way of creating newsworthy incidents that keep their pu blishers happy.

Cursitor Doom does want to believe the worst about Sweden, and does seem to search out reports that conform to his pre-conceptions. More objective rep orts rate the country more positively.

It's not that so much, as that if a reporter guarantees an audience (and pe rhaps a performance fee) the guys with the hand grenades and the machine gu ns will stage a particularly photogenic re-enactment.

Reporters need dramatic incidents to report, and there no point in creating a dramatic incident if there aren't any critics around to report on the qu ality of the drama created.

Street theatre does depend on having an informed and receptive audience. Pa ssing pedestrians just don't offer the sort of feedback that justifies the effort.

so it is the reporters fault? before they came it was just a boring suburb with birds singing?

So, you prefer unregulated environments? No drivers licences? No medical training? No university degrees? No food inspection? All of these regulations and laws are brought about by the faceless bureaucrats you seem to despise. If you disagree with a regulation/law (as is your right) you fight that one issue - but saying ALL regulations (and thus laws) are pointless is the path to destruction.

In other words, regulation/law is the attempt to control what people can and can't get away with. Not all are good, but we can't have a society without them.

If you don't like it then you are a believer of chaos and good luck to you and your family.

Probably not, but having a few reporters around with an axe to grind can a make a suburb much less boring than it was before it got promoted to "an ar ea of interest".

There's always a question about which came first, the chicken or the egg. E ven Sweden may have a number of not all that boring suburbs, but the one th at turns on the most entertaining street theatre is going to be the one tha t attracts the international reporters.

And an enterprising reporter can offer help and advise if the local street theatre isn't entertaining enough.

Jim has advertised his intention here of shooting his more left-wing (not r ight-wing enough) neighbours "when the US falls apart". In other words, if things look chaotic to him, he'll act to make them even more chaotic (if hi s fore-warned neighbours don't get in first).

And to improve product safety. And to raise tax revenue. And to quash compe tition.

always. 3rd world governments don't have enough regulations, 1st world all have too many.

I don't recall any election in my lifetime where one party promised to repe al unconstructive legislation. Even if there was one, 99.9% of legislation passed during my life has never been up for repeal. It's one of the many wa ys what we have differs from democracy.

Strangely, people railing that "government bureaucracy is terrible" always choose to stay in such "terrible" places. They never seem to go to places where there is minimal bureaucracy.

The whiff of hypocrisy is overwhelming.

Reply to

Of course that is not consistently the case. When they do it's because it's poor countries that lack regulation, and wealthy countries that are overregulated. Also people tend to stay where they are for other equally obvious reasons.

They don't do that, to the extent that it was a part of a famous British sitcom in the 70s (Citizen Smith), and was a famous scene in the only worthwhile Monty Python movie (Life of Brian).

OTOH, that is precisely what fascist and other totalitarian organisations do.

My understanding of the socialist position is that they feel some regulation is essential. How much regulation is debatable, and real socialists (as opposed to people who claim to be socialist) have free elections in which the population can chose.

Jim likes to keep his thinking simple, with nice simple - if misleading - binary choices.

Clueless. Try looking at the population shift in the US. People are leaving CA, NY, IL, CT (and a pile of others) for places like AZ, TX, and GA.

No, that's the rotten stench of your incredible ignorance.

says that krw has got his facts right for once, but it is unlikely that politics has got much to do with it. States like AZ, TX, and GA have become more comfortable places to live now that air-conditioning has become widely available and affordable.

In the past, anybody with enough education to realise that there were more pleasant environments moved out, leaving behind the ignorant stick-in-the-muds that still dominate the state political systems.

It will take a while before the new immigrants take over the state's politics, and set up regulation systems that don't grossly favour the good old boys.

Cleaning up the gerrymandering may take longer
