I defy *anyone* (excepting our resident moron, Bill Sloman, of course) to argue with the premise of that headline. Time was when journalism was a respectable profession - and a critically important one to the sound functioning of democracy. Those days, sadly, are long, long, long gone. :(

Cursitor Doom's ideas about journalism are formed by what he reads in the M ail.

If he had the wit to move up to more competent journalism - which The Guard ian still seems to offer - he might get exposed to a better class of journa list.

Sadly, he would also have to put up with a more realistic view of the world , which he clearly wouldn't like. One in in which anybody who went along wi th his current point of view was clearly moronic, and people with more real istic points of view were less so.

He's not going to give up his gratifying delusions, no matter how fatuous t hey are.

Right-wing lunatics don't like The Guardian - it doesn't publish the kind o f stories that right-wing lunatics like to read, rather going to the troubl e and expense of finding out what really happened. This once put a UK cabin et minister behind bars, which is not the kind of success that the right-wi ng press ever seems to be able to claim.

The whole episode was hilarious, but the joke was on Aitken.

** One should always keep in mind that "journalists" are nothing more than paid, professional liars.

" Never let the truth get in the way of a good story " is not a funny remark, it's the working mantra of the profession.

That's Murdoch's "journalists". There are others.

Of course even Murdoch had to shut down The UK "News of the World"
