OT: How can I find web hoster with least spam problems?

Folks,

After the umpteenth time of their outgoing email server being blacklisted I've had it with 1and1. Considering a switch to Bluehost but before doing that whole transfer slog during a quiet time (if there ever is one ...) I'd like to know:

Is there a way to find out whether Bluehost or maybe another provider is more reliable? I am not concerned whether or not my web site goes down once in a while which it really doesn't with 1and1. My concern is getting spam bounces on outgoing emails where 1and1 does a very poor policing job on their servers.

Not looking forward to that switch but it seems that needs to happen.

Are you being block by domain name? or just the outgoing email server?

If you r on a muti-hosting platform someones elses website can get you blocked, in that case you need a SSL account and a dedicated IP.

Other wise, on the email server side online outlook works great and we've never been blocked.

I've had this happen with my provider, but not in a long, long time. I was using a server running Plesk which they claim was not very secure so they made me switch to their server running Cpanel. I can't recommend them actually. My main complaint is that they do go down once in a while, usually for pretty short durations, but I don't like when my email program rings the error bell and I have to go check if the server is down so I can report it. They also dissed me when they finally pulled the plug on the server without a formal notice that it was happening that day. I found out when my entire site was gone.

Outgoing server. I asked them to switch me to another one but they only had the lame excuse "We can't do that". So I may just have to do it the hard way.

I want to keep it simple. It isn't coekt science to police a server. I just need to find a host that has staff competent enough to do that.

Hopefully yours isn't Bluehost?

That's the stuff I want to find out before making the switch. Mainly how competent their IT guys are. With 1and1 I am not pleased in that respect when it comes to spam-policing their own clients.

Pick another hosting arrangement that will allow you to use SMTP for outgoing emails. There is nothing to prevent you having more than one way of sending outgoing emails. Nothing else need change at all.

ISTR there is a way to use gmail SMTP with a domain that you control. Take a look in demon.service around April last year for details.

The chances that both will be blacklisted simultaneously is slim.

Interesting to hear that 1&1 has this happen. My original ISP Demon used to be very good about it once upon a time but after being taken over by Voodofone it all went to hell in a handbasket.

Now all I retain is the subdomain of Demon and a few pointers.

Thanks, bookmarked. The term "Cloud Hosting" gives me the goose bumps but I hope they don't mean their whole cyberspace is virtual.

They did just have an oops but that can happen.

I had that for a while via AT&T but now their email froze up. It's frustrating. A lot of web and telco stuff is beginning to unravel. Even phone. For example, Verizon does not seem to like my long distance carrier so the calls end in "number not in service".

It has become particularly bad over the last two years. Time to leave, I guess.

Email is key for me, the web site has become less important as I grow older. Hopefully it'll be calmer in late April or early May, then I could do a transfer. AFAICT a domain transfer to another host can cause a temporary "outage" for email.

It wasn't a problem for me... my original E-mail was via my ISP, Cox.

Inbound used my analog-innovations E-mail address thru the website, forwarded thru Cox. Outbound via Cox.

Once they (OLM) taught me how to manage the security I had two copies inbound for a few hours, then I closed off Cox. ...Jim Thompson

I have that doubling up since a long time. Main biz email and then a fwd to a travel account.

My web site has a complete verbatim copy on my hard drive and on all backups so that should be painless.

OLM's pricing certainly looks good and they don't play the bait game with short-term teaser rates. No idea how they can offer "unlimited domains" where each costs a registration fee. That somehow can't be. I'd prefer if they also take care of domain registration and renewal.

You could probably save a buck fifty with their starter plan :-)

With that I will never trust the Internet.

Still have POTS. Unless that spirals up to outrageous cost I want to keep it. Last thing to go in a wildfire situation, usually.

The telcos always have us over the barrel. Or cable companies, same thing, like Missy Bell. They have de facto monopolies or duopolies. I pay $52 for 6Mbps DSL. The cable comnpany wants (I think) around $70 for faster business DSL but the way they slosh cables through the neighborhood I don't trust it from a technical POV. And 6Mbps is way fast enough for me.

The only alternative is a radio link provider where we'd be at the fringe. Ok, as an RF guy I can whip up a good antenna but their email performance is hokey at best and then it has to cross their server.

The other item that gets people big time is cell phones. I have a pay-as-you-go one which now costs around $8/mo (thanks to new commie taxes). But the minute you want data it pops to almost 45/mo with the new taxes. Sometimes that would be nice to have but my usage would be so low that it ain't worth it.

If you want voice, a reasonably large number of texts, and some data then look at

You can choose voice minutes and amount of data separately, and the neat thing is that you can change your choices month by month, even after you have gone over your current limit, basically up until they send the invoice for that month, all with no contract. I keep the data choice at 100 MB because I do a lot of texts but hardly any data, and then if I run over that I just bump to the next plan for that month and then go back down. My bill is usually $31/month. They buy tower time from AT&T so they have the same coverage for voice and 4GLTE.

Why do you think "unlimited domains" means they pay for your domain name registration? They are referring to hosting an unlimited number of domains.

My account at eBoundhosting lets me "sell" domain hosting so I host domain names for friends and they all get their own control panels. It's better that way so they can make and fix their own problems.

I was with Net10 and got tired of the poor support and poor voice quality. I piggybacked on a friend's ATT plan for $20 a month (plus fees, so $25). Much better quality and it's all I need, unlimited voice and texts. With a dumb phone I don't really need data. Funny part is my friend just got a text from ATT saying she has some number of months to get a new phone since hers doesn't work with 3G and they won't continue to support older phones. lol
