OK, i took the plunge in "filtering" messages. But it does not work; some i tagged as "mark as read" and others "delete". I even closed the browser (Netscape 7.2) and re-started it. My experience so far is that "filters" is, to be polite, fantasy.
I set them up via the Tools pulldown menu and selected Message Filters, and filled out the requisite info. On shutting down the browser and re-launching it, i verified the filters existed and the "enabled" checkbox was checked. Of what possible use is the so-called "help" file? Almost all help files are useless to begin with, and in this case it appears i did everything OK. If need, i could do screen shots of the filter windows and post those on ABSE. Other suggestions?
If it's any comfort, it doesn't work in Mozilla either. For email, yes. For newsgroups, no. I guess newsgroups aren't high on the pecking order these days when it comes to SW projects.
A real stand-alone newsreader is probably a lot better but I haven't taken the plunge yet. If these bar fights here on usente continue I guess I'll have to.
I use filters to read newsgroups with Thunderbird. The only limitation is that the filter does not react to headers already loaded. The filter process takes place as new headers are loaded. I have to mark all messages read to get rid of the already loaded headers (I display only unread messages, and filter to mark the filtered message as already read.)

Works fine for me in old Netscape, all the way to the latest available Mozilla and Seamonkey. All the pork swords are gone, except when a bored regular feeds the trolls (you know who you are). No misspelled colours, no chimps, nobody with diapers on their heads, either. *There is hope.*
One fine point is that if you want the filter to apply to a single group, you have to make sure to select the right one. You can also filter all groups on a server.
Another approach is to use individual filters. For instance, here I'm using Seamonkey, and looking at a post from the poor motherless child (*sob*). Because I'm too soft hearted to bear it, I go up to the Message menu, and select "Create filter from message". Up comes the dialogue box. I leave the search term default, because the term "Niemadre", while sad, is specific without leaving obvious loopholes. To avoid messing up the message threading, I choose the action "Mark As Read" instead of "Delete Message".
If I wanted to include his other multiple personalities, I'd add them to the top of the dialogue, carefully selecting the "Match any of the following" radio button.
Now my private world will no longer be disturbed by this poor fellow's piteous cries for help. Talk about alienation.
The filters i applied now seem to work, it seems that all i had to do was to completely *turn off* the computer. Since i saw no difference between "mark as read" and "delete message", i chose the latter. I would be interested in knowing about that message threading business.
Yes, "to plonk" == "to filter", i.e., you don't see even their headers.
Well, as I said, in pan, it's just a menu item. And it's got a whole bunch of criteria that you can filter by. Your newsreader might be different, I don't really know what features other newsreaders have.
It only affects your own newsreader. The schtuff is still there for others to see or ignore as they choose, but you don't have to plow through mounds of garbage to get to the posts of interest.
Late at night, by candle light, Robert Baer penned this immortal opus:
Take a look and see if there's an "apply filters now" option. Otherwise they'll take effect gradually as old messages expire and new get filtered. Another trick is to make a "watch" filter on people who usually have something interesting to say.
It says "Netscape 7.2" in the quoted text, above. That is an integrated browser, mail and news client, and a HTML editor package. Filters only work when new files are being downloaded, they do not have the ability to delete or mark existing messages as read.
