OT: Coilcraft still doesn't get it

Coilcraft are the center of universe ;)

Anyway better to use tools that disables hijacking features.

I received a copy of their "NEW! March 2006 Edition!" data book CD, and the piece of @#%$ STILL displays everything in a maximized Internet Explorer window *that can't be resized*.

Yeah, I really needed a big monitor just so that Coilcraft could take over every last inch of it...

If you have an NVIDIA graphics card you could make more desktops like X on Linux does for free - let coilcraft corrupt one of them. Maybe Opera or Mozilla can disable resizing?

Hi Frithiof,

Hmm... not a bad idea... although it still rubs me the wrong way...

(BTW, Windows XP has multiple desktops support provided by a free Microsoft "Power Toy" download... it's been around for years.)

Apparently there is software out there for Internet Explorer to do this; I'd love to hear the name of such a piece of software.

It's somewhat surprising how many sites still (attempt to) use pop-ups given how most people now block them...

Yep, I just LOVE the Firefox message box that says, "Firefox has blocked a pop-up on this site. For more information click here" ;-)

Joel,

I'm the director of marketing communications here at Coilcraft, so I guess I'm the one responsible for hogging your monitor. Sorry!

First, let me suggest that you're always better off using our web site instead of the CD, which is out of date before it's even pressed. Our web site has loads of selection guides, design tools and a handy cart for ordering evaluation samples.

If you still want to use the CD, remember that you can just Alt-Tab over to other windows. When we designed the CD, we thought people would want to see the maximum amount of data, and so we suppressed the browser tools. We'll definitely rethink that before we create the next version.

Thanks for the feedback.

John Stellberg COILCRAFT Director of Marketing Communications

OOOkay. Let's take the 7mm unicoil as the example. The "Dimensions" link is broken. There is no mention of the differences between the 146 and the

150 series. There is no mention of the hex hole size for the tuning slug.

Other pages have similar oopsies. I know a good proofreader that works cheap {;-)

Hello John,

First of all thanks for showing up here in the group. That takes guts and most companies don't bother (they should...).

WRT to your web site a few hints:

Lose the stat trackers and hitbox. It slows things down, often big time.

Make budgetary pricing available without prior registration. Calling a distributor for a price is something that most of us quit doing more than a decade ago, unless it is for huge quantity deal (and then Purchasing typically does that). We are used to one-click budgetary prices.

Negotiate a deal with Digikey and/or Mouser. The typical design process happens with the Digikey site window open. When something isn't found on there or is persistently out of stock it usually is not designed in. And when your inductors didn't get ECO'd in right at release time chances of getting them onto the BOM later are pretty slim.

Hi John,

Thanks for your thoughtful response; I do appreciate it.

So why *disable* the ability to re-size the window? Maximizing the window is perhaps slightly annoying, but if you do it only *once* when the CD first runs and then let people re-size the window to their own preference, I think you'll have accomplished the dual goals of displaying as much information as possible and not annoying people with large monitors.

BTW, those nifty new conical inductors you guys have are pretty slick... although I wish the price tag was considerably under $20 each!

More web site errors (and I found awhile back while doing Real Engineering Work -- not just playing Net Cop): On

formatting link
several of the "TM" and "(R)" link to the wrong PDF file -- it appears to be a "copy and paste" error.

Good thinking, let the user choose and have complete control. I usually have my main windows at about 80% screensize and icons for other frequently used programs around the edges. Easier to pop up something than traversing the start menu. A well designed page doesn't need a maximised window and it's rare that I do it for other than CAD and the occasional crappy pdf.

Amen to that !

Registration simply to view critical information is wholly counter-productive. I simply avoid sites requiring that.

Good Lord yes.

Tried Opera ? I only find a few sites that trouble it - doubtless coded for IE only of curse.

I just turn on the desktop toolbar on all of my Windows computers, and click on it when I need something from there.

Yeah, some sites get bitchy about it. There are still some options to limit how they can mess with the status bar and window sizing. Some sites get around that (and pop-up blocking) with a script-within-script technique.

Use Firefox with NoScript (easily available extension). Lets you permit scripts by URL. It uses a whitelist approach, so the default is scripting prohibited. You can also 'temporarily allow' a domain for the current session (until you restart Firefox).

I *love* it.

Cheers
