OT: Buying a car, legit or scam

It's way to cheap. Vin is invalid. But how is he going to scam me?

--------------------------- I'm selling it so low due the fact that my medical team will deploy back to Afghanistan on February 10th for 1 year contract and its not worth keeping insurance and paying storage fees for 1 year so there's no use on keeping it,therefore I need a fast and reliable buyer. If you have any other questio ns, please feel free to ask.

I sealed the car in an USMC army warehouse in Las Vegas, NV. It's ready fo r shipping and the delivery will be door-to-door, at your exact location, s o you will not have to pick it up from somewhere else. I ask my son to list the car in a few different cities for a fast sale an d because I have a free shipping. The shipping is free for me because the a rmy will take care of the transportation, the car will arrive on a military trailer. So we will be using eBay as a supervisor for the transaction. Basically t hey will monitor the entire process, secure the payment and also supervise the shipping process and paper exchange. The car will come with all the pap ers including the title, the full service history and a bill of sale signed by me. You will have 5 days from the time you receive the vehicle to arran ge an inspection and decide if you want to keep it or not. Once you get the vehicle and finish the inspection, if you want to keep i t you will have to contact eBay and authorize them to release the payment t o me. If the vehicle is not suitable for you by any reason, your funds will be fully refundable and I'll take the vehicle back on my cost. Anyway, I'm more then sure you will love the vehicle from the first second and decide to buy it. So, if you wish to proceed, just shoot me an email with your name and shi pping address, a phone # and your email where you can be reached and I'll i nitiate the deal through eBay.

VIN invalid means it's not the vehicle it claims to be, ie stolen or cut & shut. The implications of that depend on what country you're in.

Notice you will not be involved in the delivery and will wait around for an army truck to arrive----- does that sound like the army (which army??), also you will release the funds to the seller and then wait for delivery, this is the classic scam. Tell the seller if you still feel like dealing with him you will come and collect and pay COD to see his response (dont carry the cash with you should he concurr). Note also you will not be able to see the car because "it's sealed in a wharehouse" more classic stuff.

Yeah looks like a scam USMC is a branch of the navy, not the army.

How will he scam you? Possibly with a fake refund. possibly by misrepresenting something with paypal.

Yes, the paper submitted to eBay is for a 2004 Mercedes registered to someone else, not the 2012 Fusion he said. I'll pass on the "great" deal. Does eBay even do a simple check?

Do auction houses? Do newspapers? No, they have Ts&Cs insisting the seller has the right to sell.

If you have to ask...

Having a car (manufacturered after whenever) with an invalid VIN is sort of like having a car with no title - i.e. worthless.

I was in the market for a used Honda a while back and got what I thought was a good deal on eBay...met with the cat and he couldn't come up with a valid title. Shit was likely hot.

Forget this guy and his tale of woe.

Yeah it seems likely this guy is trying to dump a hot car with OP as the fence.

Forget that...

But ebay motor has buyer protection plan. If he doesn't deliver or delivers the wrong thing, i can claim refund from ebay. Of course, if he puts in the wrong item in the invoice and i accepted the invoice, then i have no claim.

The first VIN is invalid with the last digit of 2. I asked for the correct VIN The second VIN is invalid with the last digit changed to 3. The VIN on ebay invoice is totally different.

The pictures he sent me looks like 2004 Fusion with old style interior and 15" wheel. The 2012 Fusion interiors are different and with 17" or 18" wheel.

This guy is an amature scamer. I am tempted to show him my findings, but don't really want to help him improving his scamming skill.

The ebay protection is BS. If your item is listed with the shipping company as "delivered" ebay won't even talk to you about non-delivery. I had an item sent back to the sender because UPS would not hold it one day for me to pick up. Ebay got a notification it was "delivered" even though it was delivered back to the seller. I had to invoke the credit card protection to get my money back.

Similar thing has happened with other shipments and ebay has very little support for the buyers. Mostly you have leverage with the seller by threatening to leave back feedback.

Some time back a friend's paypal account was hacked by scammers who transferred all her money out and even got money off her registered credit card. She filed with paypal to get it all back, but when I tried to contact someone at paypal about getting law enforcement involved they literally gave us the run around which I figured out when after four different phone numbers for four different departments I recognized the first lady's voice. Basically they didn't want to file a complaint as that would leave a permanent record of fraud on paypal. So in essence they support the thieves by never reporting them.

Is there a way to file a complaint with ebay?

Yes, but if i put all these on ebay filings, he will see it and do a better job next time on somebody else.

Easy. He does not have the car and you will get nothing for your money.

Have not looked for a long time , but this use to be a Craigslist scam. I use to do a search on the car description and would find that the scam artist had just copied and pasted someone else's description. Too much work to come up with photo's etc.
