Datasheet indeed is useless for this. Google for images and you'll see that it's directly from the top. Optomechanical dimensions in the DS would be nice, though!

"PACKAGE CONSIDERATIONS
"The ADPD2211 is packaged with a transparent epoxy molding compound."
There's a big exposed pad on the bottom (that must be left floating), so that pretty much leaves the top.
However, Page 9 of 13 also mentions
"To optimize the sensitivity of the ADPD2211, it is important to ensure that the optical signal is concentrated on the photoactive area of the integrated photodiode. The on-board precision current amplifier is shielded and is not significantly affected by light hitting its surface, but device sensitivity is based solely on the optical power incident to the photo detector."
There doesn't seem to be a detail drawing of exactly where the detector is, so wave your LED light around and watch for a peak?

There's a discussion area on on the Analog Devices web-site. Unsurprisingly, the question has been asked and the answer was
"The PD size is 1695 x 1410. It is centered in the X direction and is offset in the Y direction by 543um."
Not perfect, but better than the data-sheet.
John should have e-mailed Steve Goldstein .
He won't be responsible, but he will know who to pass the message to.

John should have e-mailed Steve Goldstein - I've done it via Eternal September.

Close, but no cigar - that's not my email address. Remove the uppercase letters from this sending address and you'll have it.

The "zero bias photoconducting mode" is interesting. So is the detector area spec.
If people aren't going to provide good support, they should write good data sheets.

The evaluation kit photo shows it but, of course, that is no excuse for a shoddy datasheet:
