LED beacon on bike to signal robot cars

An electronics design can make a $1 LED flashing infra-red signaling sequence that tells cars about your insurance litigation abilities. The future bike tail lights will flash a 50 kHz signal code for:

"Dear robot car teslas uber, my insurance insists that you read my website before smashing me. This is your only warning. Breaking the shrink wrap indicates your explicit agreement to pay a million dollars."

The flashing leds on pedestrians and bikes will be read by future cars with no skilled drivers and by traffic signals. The reading will be recorded for any court proceedings against uber or tesla.

It wouldn't be outrageous for every vehicle to broadcast its location and velocity (and even intent?) to other vehicles.

It would be cool to extend that to bicycles and pedestrians, but that's probably not practical.

That is the _intent_, if you read the pizzazzed "spec"... every vehicle will "talk" to every other adjacent vehicle and exchange information. ...Jim Thompson

There is a draft standard regarding the features and functions of autonomous vehicles.

UBER apparently had some problems conforming >:-} ...Jim Thompson

It's in the works. Google "V2V" and "V2X" communication.

Not terribly, no, though perhaps call phones would work. V2X is probably going to be an application on 5G anyway.

V2V = Vehicle to Vehicle V2X = Vehicle to Everything V2D = Vehicle to Device V2G = Vehicle to Grid V2P = Vehicle to Pedestrian

I wouldn't mind adding: V2B = Vehicle to Bicycle V2E = Vehicle to Electric Scooter but I don't think we're quite there yet.

All the aformentioned are being worked on to improve driverless car functionality and safety.

Pedestrians are in the plans, but not bicycles. Maybe after the recent Uber accident, bicycles might be included.

It's in the plans, but I don't think using cell sites is a good idea. In the US, the FCC has allocated 5.850 - 5.925 GHz for V2X, also known as Intelligent Transport System. It's meant to be point to point or a mesh topology. Going through a 5G cellular system is going to create latency, routing problems, and un-necessary complexity, since the messages really only need to be heard by the adjacent vehicles, not the entire network. It would only work in areas with 5G infrastructure, which might take longer to deploy than the driverless car makers are willing to wait. Unlike the US, Europe is looking ahead and setting up the regulatory structure and standards needed to implement V2X over 5G (ITS-G5). Of course, the EU 5.875 - 5.905 GHz frequencies are different from the US system.

Bicycles are vehicles, but the recent crash was with a pedestrian.

True, but around here it would always be the same old tired message:

"I'm a lazy asshole, so I get to park in the fire lane." :)

Sorry, it's a pet peeve of mine. If I were a policeman, they would have to tell me to stop writing tickets for this. I would flood the system writing up so many violations!

As for the pun ("tired message" in relation to vehicles - in case you missed it), well... no excuse for that one. :)

I've never had a robot car rear end and wreck a vehicle of mine while texting, but I've definitely had a human do it on a couple of occasions.

Usually the people who do that have done it before and have some shitty insurance company that likes to drag their heels paying out the 30k market value of my car when they only had to pay out 500 bucks for their client's. they also definitely don't like the fact that in those

100%-other-party-at-fault incidents I insist they comp me everything e.g. a very nice rental, fuel for the rental, taxi fare to and from the rental agency, whatever I can think of.

They balk at that stuff too but then filing a small claims lawsuit against their client for the extras tends to wake them up and put an end to the heel-dragging nonsense, perfectly within my Constitutional right to do so. Not my job to beg and plead with the other insurance company to move along with the settlement while their client sits pretty with a "new" beater in the driveway, oh no. The idiot who hit me will also be working for _me_ on that one while I kick back and relax, not the reverse

What is a WTH? Did you mean QTH?

Personally, I think the first useful feature of the system will be V2ATM, where the vehicle will act as a proxy banker and perform financial transactions with a drive by ATM. I'm sure the cities will go for it if they can charge the vehicle directly for parking, traffic tickets, toll charges, etc.

Never mind the useful features and functions. Think about how a technology can be abused, and that will determine its final success or failure.

The lady that was killed was walking her bicycle across the road when she was hit by the Uber driverless car. The lady driving was apparently asleep. The problem was that the Uber pattern recognition system did not recognize a person walking a bicycle. It might have recognized a person walking across the road, or someone riding a bicycle across the road, but not a person WALKING a bicycle across the road. There have been other reports of driverless car systems not recognizing bicycles.

The ultimate horror would be for tickets to be issued automatically, for everything, based on that automation.

We all grew up on Nintendo, we know pretty well how the immediate score penalty for doing things the game instructions tell you not to do works in an abstract sense.

I thought it was only in front of liquor stores that parking in the fire lane was legal? At least it seems like it. I guess some people want to minimize their walk in case they aren't steady enough to get to the car without falling down.

The first video released started at least 5 seconds before impact. Those of us paying attention saw the shadow of the "bicycle woman" very early in the video, several seconds _before_ impact.

The "driver" wasn't asleep, she was looking down at her phone.

The "driver" is an ex-con.

There is some questions implying "autonomous" mode was just turned off.

There are also questions regarding the fact that the UBER vehicle lacked some of the sophisticated pedestrian sensors that Google vehicles have.
