Ambient air temperature is rendered insignificant to the measurement by heating the filament enough (several hundred degrees) that a few tens of degrees fluctuation in ambient makes little difference in the measurement. Google "hot wire anemometer."

Google 'Mass Air Flow Sensor'. Hot wire type is very common in automobiles.
