crt/display controllers

hi everyone, I was looking around but was not able to find anyone that manufactures and sells crt or display controllers. like the old 6845 or 8275 or even crt9007. I know those are old and not manufactured anymore. I was looking and hoping to find some newer and more up to date chips. does anyone know of any suppliers/ manufacturers. I would like color also if possible but that is only wishful thinking at this point. thanks.

Ken

Have a look at Asiliant technologies. They took over the old Intel display controllers, and the 65545 chip, might be suitable.

Yamaha make some chips that have rgb and lcd outputs, Hitach once did an evaluation board for their lcd displays that had 1 fitted.

They are not too popular these days. Maybe you should cobb something together in an FPGA.

Goodness. I recall doing one ages back using a Chips and Technologies part for a POS terminal.

This may be of interest....

If you are looking to output to a VGA monitor you can either use the Thumbnail ARM VGA module

or implement your own based around an LPC21xx using the free downloads plus a bit of tweaking. You can interface to the Thumbnail over a serial coms link with SPI or I2C. Just send the character strings as fast as you like. High level commands can be embedded in a control string to perform more complex operations. It's all too easy!

These modules are not dumb or slow, neither are they expensive. The modules are priced around USD$40, cheaper in quantity. The 2106 Thumbnail is loaded with 64K RAM internal and can provide higher vertical resolution while a newer 2148 version will be released soon that although it has less memory is able to achieve up to 480x480 mixed-mode resolution.
