There already exists a PCIe plugin card for USB-3.
A USB-3 driver will be in Linux kernel 2.6.31,
that driver is already available from here (Intel driver):
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/sarah/xhci.git;a=summary
USB-3 should allow up to 300 MByte / second and more.
USB-3 is compatible to USB-2, but needs 4 more conductors.
