Is the mounting tab isolated or metal? Was it fixed to a PCB with the tab or vertical?

They have high current, low(ish) forward voltage, and they're fast, so one use might be for general protection of DC circuits against reverse polarity, especially those that might be destroyed before a fuse can blow. Connect them across the supply terminals, reverse biased, just after the input fuse. This will make sure the only casualty of reverse connection is that fuse. Especially useful for stuff plugged to car batteries. They're meant for better things, but if you already have them...

Someone might come up with a more sensible answer soon.
