OT: Griddle Latch

This griddle...

doesn't have any way to latch the two halves together so that it can be stored on-edge... it flops open.

The drain configuration (close-up) suggests some kind of latch could be devised.

Any ideas?

Thanks! ...Jim Thompson

Redneck version: Take a snippet of wire and twist it around that corner. If you feel extra generous do it to both corners.

Suburban dweller's budget solution: Cut two pieces off of a 1" PVC pipe. From the pile you bought when your wife wanted you to lay some irrigation 15 years ago but you haven't gotten around to it yet. Then cut pieces out lengthwise so they look like a letter "C" from the side. Snap over the corners, open bottle of Merlot, call it a day.

Highfalutin version: Make two clamps from sturdy but springy steel. Should look like a letter "C" from the side but with the ends swopping down and then up a but again. Of course, don't make them so stiff that you need pliers to get them off.

All American solution: Buy a bigger house so you don't need to store it on edge.

Stand it on edge like a book, with the hinge at the back, rather than lying on its hinge.

Bet it gets too hot there for rubber or fabric... My hardware store has just the thing, though you'd have to drill and tap mounting holes. Can't find a picture, but I used a large one (they come in all sizes) to hold a gate closed.

Why not drill a clearance hole for, say, a 10-32 machine screw in the
handle and then drill and tap the apron above the controls so that you

Those solutions have a very low WAF. Although for a the evap cooler I installed here I'll have to use that technique for the winter cover I have to make. The manufacturer doesn't provide any. That would have been asking too much I guess ...

Something like this might work...

Though the 4-piece set shown on the right looks like they're smaller.

I'll have to stop by Lowe's and take a look.

I have the 4" and 6" versions. They're great. That's how I built the barby... align/level steel and clamp, then go around attaching with self-drilling sheet metal screws ;-) ...Jim Thompson

For storage of a kitchen gadget? ... ... Now that has an ultra-low WAF. Before I met my wife I used to make pizza dough with one of the kneeding hooks fastened in my Metabo hammer drill. Click ... lights dim a bit ... *SHHHROOOOOAAAAAAAAR* ... done. First time she was over at my house she said "But promise me that we don't do this no more, will ya?"

I still use grandpa's, the threaded kind.

There's got to be some solution that involves leather or fabric and a sewing machine.. maybe a pouch or something.

Bungee cord with suitable plastic hooks on the ends (so they don't mar the finish).

Loop the cord around the handle and hook both ends under the spout. Many bungee cords can be cut shorter and re-knotted to fit the application.

So, affix an eye bolt at or about the hinge, and hang it on a hook. Hanging of odd items (food mill, ricer, pressure cooker lid, herbs drying, Smithfield ham) is a convenient alternative to shelf storage.
