After yet another visit to a client using a CD player for music on hold, I wondered about replacing the thin with an MP3 player. Any thoughts? Are they reliable enough to see out a year or two of 8 hours/5 days a week operation?

Don't see why not, just rig up some decent external batteries and a float charger. Then load one song and set it for continous play with one song: "A lapdance is so much better when the stripper is crying" by the bloodhound gand.
Yep - replacing a mechanical device with a electronic one is a good idea. There is no wareout with MP3s.
However..... typically there is no power up and play on MP3 players... as with profesional music on-hold MP3 players.
