Flashing DVD Rom Firmware LG GDR 8163B

As stated the model in question is LG GDR 8163B

I did download the firmware from here and it works a treat but I am wondering if there is a hacked version available.

I have the previous model LG drive and downloaded a patched firmware for that but that drive stopped working properly in that the disk wasn't being held in the mechanism when it was inserted.

I was wondering if I could flash firmware from the old drive to my current drive since their boards are almost identical internally.

no, u must only get the one that work specifically for your model, NOT compatible etc...

ie, if the firmware is for particular model, it must only use for that particular model.

unless you know for sure that it works to use one from another model. More likely this is from "badge engineering" ,eg where a sony drive is actually a liteon with a sony badge on the front. The liteon firmware may be better/hacked, so you use that one.

Well in my case both drives are LG and the older non working drive seems to have the same boards internally to the new working drive.

So I figured I could use the firmware from the other drive in the new once because they use almost the same boards and the same chips for the firmware.

And if it worked at least I'd then be able to get around the region locking.

I get that point but when both drives have very similar internals right down to the chips how can you go wrong?

Anyway I found a neat site which lists a ton of drives and has firmware for it here you go.

Clearly 'very similar' doesn't count.

The Pioneer DVR109 and the A??109 have different firmware.

I thought the "A" was just a retail version but clearly not.

No idea what the diff is but the Pioneer site has warnings about buggering the drive.

XP thought I had a new drive after the flash too - probably the firmware ver no. did it.
