Do You Know the Time ?

" Do You Know The Time? "

( An existential play in one act )

Characters: Wolf, a poor Jewish woman and a stranger.

Scene: All three are seated at a tram stop in Hamburg in 1940

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Woman to Wolf: Excuse me sir, do you know the time ?

Wolf: Yes, I do.

Woman, puzzled: I see now that you have no watch, so how do you know the time ?

Wolf, sarcastically: You want to bet me 1000 Reichsmarks that I do not know the time ?

Woman, shrugs: Bet a man with no watch 1000 Reichsmarks ? If you told me the time, I would not know if you were right.

Wolf: Madam, after you put up the 1000 Reichsmarks, I will whisper the time to this stranger here and he will tell you I am right.

Woman: But I cannot tell if the stranger has a watch and if he says you are right, how will I know if he is right?

Wolf: So, you are not willing to bet me 1000 Reichsmarks and you still don't believe I know the time ?

Woman: That is correct ....

Wolf, annoyed: Are you calling me a liar ?

Woman, frustrated: You act like one.

Wolf, very annoyed: Madam, you need to put up 1000 Reichsmarks right now or SHUT UP !!

Woman, astonished: You must be crazy.

Wolf, stands and faces the woman and shouts: So ..... you REFUSE to believe me AND you also REFUSE to bet me 1000 Reichsmarks and YOU say I am the CRAZY one ??

I DEMAND an APOLOGY !!!

I will not be called a LIAR by some DAMN Jewess !!

Wolf summons a passing Gestapo officer and has the woman arrested for insulting a member of the National Socialist Party.

Play Ends.

** Comparisons with Fritz Lang - that's quite an honour....

His Wiki mentions that his wife got the strange idea in her head to join the Nazi Party in 1932 - so he divorced her.

Are you sure this isn't Fritz, Phil, and Don on aus.electronics newsgroup in

2011, and the bet is $1000AUD, and not 1000 Reichsmarks?

It almost reminds me of a movie moment when Samuel L Jackson gave a sermon like speech during an armed robbery in the restaurant, nearing the end of the 1994 classic "Pulp Fiction". (one of my favorites)

===============

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee."

===============

After this, he then played a little game of role reversal, which very much confused the audience, as well as Honey Bunch and Ringo. Vincent (John Travolta) was taking a dump at this stage.

Now I'm not sure if I am the wolf, a poor Jewish woman, or the stranger.

Perhaps I am none of the above. I might be Gestapo! Or maybe even Vincent. :-)

Hey, my retirement gold watch just stopped. Damit.

Cheers Don...
